Do I need speech pathology?2019-11-07T02:17:22+00:00

Speech pathologists work with people across the lifespan, from newborn babies right through to the elderly.

At Wollongong Speech Pathology, we choose to offer services to adults. We are skilled at assessing your communication and swallowing. We will then work with you to achieve your goals. We only work with adults and adolescents, because this is our area of skill and passion.

Speech pathologists have university training across many areas including anatomy and physiology, linguistics, sociology, psychology. This means we are excellent at analysing a problem and finding a solution, working in partnership with people, and we care about ‘real life’ outcomes.

Allied Health Assistants

Wollongong Speech Pathology offers an Allied Health Assistant (AHA) service. An AHA has a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance, or equivalent. Your speech pathologist may bring in an AHA to support your therapy program. The AHA works under your speech pathologist’s supervision and they report back to the speech pathologist on your progress. An AHA can help you to achieve your treatment goals more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Examples of tasks the AHA may complete:

  • conduct speech pathology treatment under the supervision of a speech pathologist

  • collect data on treatment progress and report back to the speech pathologist on changes required

  • prepare homework materials and monitor progress with homework

  • help support workers to implement home programs

  • make AAC equipment and resources

  • assist group therapy sessions

Speech pathology students

Wollongong Speech Pathology takes university students on clinical placement. We do this because we believe it benefits students, our team, and most importantly our clients. You might like to go to our Speech Pathology students page, where you can “meet” some of the amazing students who have worked with us over the years!

Here are some of the reasons we host speech pathology students:

  • Can reduce therapy costs

  • A chance to “give back”

  • Prepare future speech pathologists to work with adults with communication and swallowing problems in the community
